Bedding 101: Setting Up the Ideal Hotel Bed

When choosing a hotel, you’re likely looking at everything it has to offer, from the location to the amenities to the room capacity. Everyone knows, though, that the main attraction of any hotel room is the bed. The comfort and quality of a bed can truly be the difference between a one-time guest and a loyal customer. We’ve outlined the basics of getting your bedding right so that each of your guests will get the perfect night’s sleep.

Upgrade The Mattress

Though the general recommendation is the change out your mattress for a new one every 8 years or so, many hotels will swap mattresses every 3-5 years, simply due to the sheer volume of different sleepers that can exacerbate regular wear and tear. Most hotels and short-term rental properties will use standard firm beds, as they support the average sleeper well. If you’re looking to offer your guests an extra dose of plushness, choose a feather-down mattress topper.

Choose Comfortable Sheets

After a long day of traveling and exploring, your guests are likely looking to take a warm shower and hop right into bed for a nap or a good night’s sleep. The best way to promote the ideal sleeping experience is to offer bed sheets with a high thread count. Most luxury hotels will offer bedding that has a thread count anywhere between 600 to 800. However, the average high-end accommodation will likely offer sheets with a thread count of 300. Sheets with a high thread count offer a much softer feel, and they also tend to be more durable, making it a worthy investment. Choose sheets made from fabrics like cotton, bamboo, or percale, which are breathable and offer cooling benefits. For hotels in warmer climates, you may consider offering linen sheets, as they are best for hot sleepers and those with allergies.

Opt For Plush Pillows

Though the mattress and sheets are naturally some of the most important aspects of a great sleeping experience, pillows offer the real support you need to drift off into dreamland. Luxury establishments tend to use feather or goose-down pillows, which offer that soft, pliant feel. However, hotels that are more concerned with sustainability may opt for eco-friendly, hypoallergenic down alternatives. Some hotels will even offer pillows made with bamboo material – these pillows tend to have a firmer, memory foam-like material and are great for those who require a little extra support while sleeping.

Get a Cozy Comforter

Hotels tend to use fluffy comforters that are decently lightweight. Many guests love comforters that have that “crunchy” texture – these comforters have a heavy cotton exterior and are usually filled with goose down, much like the luxury pillows mentioned above. However, if you’re going for a down alternative, try to use mostly cotton fillers, as they tend to be quite cooling and comfortable.
