Whether it’s your first semester of college or your first-time living states away from your family back home, everyone experiences homesickness at one time or another. The feeling is one of loneliness and hopelessness that can seem impossible to overcome. Learning how to pick yourself up when you’re so far away from what makes you the most comfortable is hard, but it isn’t impossible.
Get Out and About
It can be easy to isolate yourself when you’re feeling down, especially in an unfamiliar location. Staying indoors and away from civilization may seem like the thing to do, but it’s a mistake. Make an effort to get out and about to explore your new location. It will never begin to feel like home if you don’t get to know your surroundings!
Appreciate Items from Home
Stuffed animals, photos, and other items that remind you of home are an instant cure to homesickness, at least for a little while. It’s okay to cling onto these items and use them as a source of comfort! Eventually, you’ll realize it’s been days since you reached for that old stuffed animal, but it will always be there when you need it. Homesickness doesn’t ever leave completely so be sure to have plenty of items from home on hand to make you feel better.
Create New Traditions
To make your new space feel like home you have to work for it. Find a coffee shop you love and begin going there every Sunday morning. Visit a local farmers market that looks appealing. Whatever you’re attracted to, it’s essential to create new traditions for your new location. If there’s a tradition from home that you especially miss, such as a family dinner one night a week, create a new tradition on the same day and time to take your mind off the memories.
Stay in Touch
Just because you’re away from home physically doesn’t mean you can’t be involved mentally! Keep in touch with friends and family to feel like you’re still keeping up on life back home but be cautious not to let it overtake your new life.
Be Realistic
Expecting your homesickness to go away after a week in a new location is unrealistic and placing that pressure on yourself will likely make the feeling worse. It’s okay to feel this way, but you can’t dwell on it or let it overcome you. Keep realistic expectations for your progress in the new location both mentally and physically!
